This is a great campaign for Dungeons and Dragons, Wizards Of The Coast’s brand of board games and rpg’s. In an attempt to ward of the deluge of online rpgs like Worlds Of Warcraft or Neverwinter Nights, they show the gamer as a loner, spending his nights in solitude in front of his computer, instead of in the company of like-minded friends.
It would seem there’s a degree in nerdiness, these days, with online gamers being that bit more nerdy than traditional gamers. Nifty.
Today’s Dargaud newsletter showcases Jazz Club, a new book by an unknown author, Clérisse. Judging from the extract on Dargaud’s website, this one’s just screaming to be translated into English.
I like collecting stamps, the way I like browsing for old comic books : if I find them, it’s a good day, but I’m not going to track all kinds of outlets to score. And I’m sure as hell not going to hunt for “limited editions”.
Brother Mike sent this clipping from this month’s Previews. I mean, what’s the added value in this ? When every dog and his master can create stamps in a limited edition, what’s the fun in stamp collecting ?
Fred Hembeck, of the “destroys [insert popular culture property]” fame, has been collecting the best columns in his his Dateline series on his website. I particularly like the one above, which makes fun of the Three Musketeers of alternative comics (Seth, Chester Brown and Joe Matt). I shudder to think what would happen if they followed his advice for spicing up their books…
This fan made trailer for a Watchmen movie just blew me away. The makers have successfully transposed the pulpy art and color that Gibson used in the comic, to a visual language that’s reminiscent of B-movies. And Rorschach’s voice is just awesome ! I can’t wait for this to be picked up by some honch at WB…
One of my favorite cartoonists, Ivan Brunetti, makes his debut today as a New Yorker cover artist. It’s a nice illustration, too. I first heard about this last week on the Fantagraphics Blog, but this week, the final version with the New Yorker log was published on their web site. As this will probably be gone within a week, I’m taking the liberty of copying it here.
Every week, my rss reader gives me a belly laugh when Kawaii Not has a new strip online. The clash between the cute and the creepy is just too funny for the office !
Three guys from my godson’s class have been making their own spin on the Pirates Of The Carribean films. I’m quite amazed at what kids can accomplish with a few basic tools these days. The editing is a bit basic, but the atmosphere and the humor are bang on. They have grabbed the character of Captain Jack very well, adding a pythonesque quality to his spiel.
Also, watch for the accidental word play at the beginning, when the executor mispronounces “Crown”…
These days, when you smoke in public you’re likely to get crucified. Used to be a time when it was OK for a children’s comic hero to advertise cigars (from a Dutch magazine, somewhere in the 80’s)…
