Michael “Tales Designed To Thrizzle” Kupperman emulates the very recognizable Hernandez style in this illustration for an article for the New Yorker (march 2, 2003).

Comics are just for kids — or are they ?

An article from National Geographic Magazine, and an house ad from Marvel Comics, both from the sixties, but from very different worlds…

I think it would have been very cool to receive this kind of mail while you’re in the army…

Filler time - Cartoon women in dove campaign

About a year ago, Dove ran a campaign featuring cartoon women like Jane Jetson and Marge Simpson, showing the benefits of Anti Frizz Creme, Volumizing Mousse, Define & Style Control Gel and Precision Volume Hairspray (the branding gurus had a day off when they thought of those names). It met with mixed reactions, and personally, I can’t say I’m overwhelmed by the idea, nor by the execution of it…

I Love Mademoiselle Annette

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

For a few months now I’ve been picking up this free lifestyle magazine called Mochi. Basically it’s just your usual combination of bling advertisments and product editorials. One thing, though, sets this mag apart from all the rest : Mademoiselle Annette. Her drawings just brighten up the day. Have a look for yourself :

I haven’t found any info on her on the web, except for a MySpace page that mentions her and her work. If you know more, let me know !

That’s the way to bring good art to the masses…

Yeti is the Flemish education department’s official magazine for kids in primary school. Rather than make it a dreary, stuffy journal, they opted to pimp it up and took on board two of the best cartoonist this country has to offer : Marnix “Nix” Verduyn and Bart “brt” Schoofs. Here’s a few examples from the latest issue. They’re (almost) textless games, so all you monolingual Anglosaxons should have no trouble understanding them ;-)

The first one is a “spot the errors” cartoon by Bart :

The second one features Nix’s heroes Kinky and Cosy. Kinky (the one with the white rimmed glasses) has had an accident. One of the shards does not belong to her glasses. Can you spot which one ? And also, can you find out exactly how this accident took place ?

Johnny Ryan is funny (actually)

The new Belgian edition to Vice is out (it probably has been out for a while, but I hadn’t seen it before), and as usual, Johnny Ryan fils up the back page with his strips. And hey, what do you know, his jokes are actually funny this time ! And oh, they’re written by somebody else - what a coincidence !

Belgian Love

De Standaard and Le Soir, two of the best Belgian daily newspapers in Dutch and French respectively, are currently running a series of articles and debates on the relationships between the Flemings (the Dutch speaking Belgians, living in the North) and the Walloons (who speak French and live in the south). I don’t really care for the articles themselves, but I absolutely adore the illustrations that were developed for the series.

The above image is only the basic version - the papers’ websites feature variations on the theme, as these examples show :
