Charles Burns has done the cover for this months issue of The Believer, with portraits of Mira Nair, Thomas Bernhard, Janeane Garofalo, and a tremendous rendition of Scott McCloud’s almost iconic self-portrait.

Michel Gagné’s book “Frenzied Fauna”, an alphabet of off-beat creatures, has been out of print for a while. Oh, well, Michel said, why not just put it online. For free. So go there

Angry Little Robot is a robot with a large square head and an attitude. Can’t take people’s illusions away soon enough, I always say. Just two episodes as yet, hopefully more to come…

Over at ComicsDC Mike Rhode shows some Stalin cartoons that he found at a rummage sale. The tone of the cartoonis is blatantly biased and past its prime, but I do like the vintage brush work.

Erik Kriek for NS

Dutch illustration wizard (and Gutsman creator) Erik Kriek presents two illustrations he made for the Dutch railways’ information magazine, Rails, over at Clogwork. I like them because they’re vintage Kriek (even though he’s evolving in his use of color) and because they are Beatles-related (even though the Beatles’ portraits need some work, I’m afraid).

Spirou Stamps (continued)

Monday, April 16th, 2007

This is the last post I’ll write about the fake stamps that were included with the comics weekly Spirou in 2001. In order to make enough fuzz about this campaign, the first issue also contained a few stamp-themed features and strips, such as the cartoon above about “Les Tuniques Bleues” creator Willy Lambil who is famed for the large size paper he uses for his battle spreads.

(The editor is saying : “Are you sure, my good friend, that I didn’t give you any indication as to the format ?”)

I mentioned the fake stamps that were added to four issues of the Francobelgian weekly “Spirou” in february-march, 2001 once or twice before. As I managed to buy these issues from a guy in Brussels who was selling his complete collection on Ebay, I’ll just go on about them for a while.

It must have been quite a big deal, as for three of the issues special a stamp-themed cover (see above).

I scanned the for sheets on 200 dpi, so as to make the scans And so, I present you large scans of all four sheets.

Will Eisner in Copenhagen

eisnercopenhagen_resize.jpg

I was chatting about finding comics stuff in the strangest places, when I mentioned coming across a Will Eisner mural while strolling around Copenhagen’s old fortifications, some years ago. Instead of just mailing the picture that I took to a few people, I tought, why not just publish it here ? And so I did.
