Monday, October 15th, 2007Seth & Chet (& Matt ?)
Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Above are the representations of Seth & Chet (Brown) by Seth & Chet respectively (from Palooka-ville 5 and The Little Man). I’m a great fan of both of them, but I was wondering if part of their appeal stems from the fact that their comics somewhat interlock, since they (at least used to) constantly refer to one another.

Come to think of it, these again are Seth & Chet, this time by buddy Joe Matt (from Peep Show 13, in my opinion the best of the series). I think it’s quite quaint that you never see Matt in the other two’s comics. Or did I miss something ?

It’s raining music everywhere
Saturday, October 13th, 2007Prince gave away his latest CD for free with UK newspaper Mail On Sunday, while Thom Yorke’s Radiohead are selling their latest via their website only for as much as you care to pay for it. To say that the industry is in a turmoil is an understatement.
But it’s a good reason to showcase my countrymen’s illustration talents once more. The image above is by cartoonist Serge Baeken and was published in the most recent issue of Focus Knack.
Persepolis Poster (II)
Friday, October 12th, 2007
Yesterday I blogged about this poster for Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis film. Today somebody sent me the German version of that self-same poster (see also here). I hope I’m not getting paranoid here (or not more paranoid than would reasonably be good for me), but is it a coincidence that the main character on this poster is smoking, whereas the woman on the American (or international, whatever) one is not ?
Interview of/by Elric and Laurel
Thursday, October 11th, 2007
Elric of Je m’appelle elric et c’est déjà pas mal and Laurel of Un crayon dans le Coeur have come up with a very nice quatre-mains : an interview with each other in comics format. Quite hilarious, if you ask me. Of course, it’s in French, so you have a good reason to learn it (if you don’t know it already, that is).
Persepolis Poster
Thursday, October 11th, 2007
This is the official poster for the US release of Marjane Satrapi’s feature animation film “Persepolis“. I like it - it really reflects the mood of the book. I hope the film does too.

Lambiek !
Thursday, October 11th, 2007
Ephemerist reader Kerstin Klein went to Amsterdam last month and made a sketch report about it. She also visited the Lambiek emporium (which every comics afficcionado should at least once in his life) and drew it as well, as you can see above.
I kinda like the way characters like Tom Poes or Lambiek (or even Gaston Lagaffe) are rendered by an artist who’s probably not familiar with them. It gives them a whole new dimension, somehow.
Heroes y Villanos
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007
Entrecomics reports on a Spanish project involving illustrative artists and cartoonists illustrating poems. They cite examples by Johan De Moor (above) and Joost Swarte, but (as far as I understand the text - I can do a wild guess when it comes to Spanish) there’s supposed to be a lot more.
I like this kind of endeavours. They bring good cartooning under the attention of different audiences, and they encourage cartoonists to do different things and stay creative.
Loaded Blanks Postcards
Wednesday, October 10th, 2007
What a great idea - Loaded Blanks is offering a range of postcards featuring short comics with blank dialogue balloons. That way, you are able to tweak the story to your liking or to the message you want to get accross.
There are cards for all kinds of occasions, and the cards feature art in a variety of styles, by people like Allison Cole, Aaron Renier and Dame Darcy. And they only cost a buck each !
