Boerke !

I posted about Pieter De Poortere earlier, here and on the FPI blog. Here are some examples of the strips he creates about his anti-hero Boerke (published in English as Dickie). These books are amongst the best humor-with-a-twist anthologies to appear in the last few years. So, buy them.

Tintincognito

Wednesday, December 5th, 2007

Celebrated Flemish cartoonist Gerard Alsteens (or Gal, for short) provided one of the campaign visuals for the new Fair Trade campaign that Oxfam Fair Trade is launching in Belgium this december. He used Leonardo’s Last Supper, but replaced the heads of Jesus and the apostles by the features of modern heroes from media and current affairs.

Bart Simpson, ET, Mickey Mouse, Charles Chaplin, John Lennon, Pope Benedictus, they all make an appearance. There’s even an anonymous Belgian reporter with a quiff. I wonder why he’s the only one who’s made “unrecognizable”. This wouldn’t be a take on Moulinsart’s quite protectionist attitude towards people who use Tintin’s likeness, would it ?

Beestenzooi

“Is hungry…”

Beestenzooi by flemish cartoonist Joffe is one of the strips published by Belgian weekly Focus Knack in their year-long quest for new cartooning talent. I quite like these strips : the idea and execution are simple and unassuming, but you can see real promise lurking underneath…

“… escapes”
