At the height of the comics crusade, DC pulled out all it had to prove it was on the right side. The “oldest comics magazine publishing firm” sided with authority. They could have sided with other publishers to defame anybody who wanted to silence the art form, but they chose to pull themselves to safety first, and watch the others drown…
And besides, what is the “Best in Comics Entertainment” - Superman, DC or National Comics ? Talk about muddled branding…

Not the most original of ideas, but I kinda like the naive quality to the illustrations. From Ads of the World, as ever.

Over at The Hotel Fred, Roger Langridge posted this image of Doctor Who avoiding having to battle a Transformer, only to notify the reader that he (that is, Langridge) has an interview posted somewhere else. I’m sure there’s a train of thought there, but it’s a quite good drawing anyway.
Oh, and while we’re on the subject of Kool Kiwi’s (I’m sure all New Zealanders will forgive me this blatantly racist denominator), today is Francis‘ last day at Cloud 9. He’ll be leaving for London soon to do his css magic there. We will miss him, and wish him all the best.

It’s not just newspapers that are going free. James Kochalka of American Elf has also changed his subscription policy : the comic’s complete archive, going back to 2002, is now available free of charge. Special sections, such as the Bonus Elf (the extra strips James draws when he feels the urge) are still for subscribers only, but the weekly comic is free.
I must admit, I’ve never subscribed to the comic, but always read it online on the day it appeared. I have the cartoon diaries at home though, and they are among the most-read books in my collection.
A free elf is a happy elf, of course, but i’m kinda wondering where this free trend will lead us.

I posted about Pieter De Poortere earlier, here and on the FPI blog. Here are some examples of the strips he creates about his anti-hero Boerke (published in English as Dickie). These books are amongst the best humor-with-a-twist anthologies to appear in the last few years. So, buy them.
Read on for more…

Celebrated Flemish cartoonist Gerard Alsteens (or Gal, for short) provided one of the campaign visuals for the new Fair Trade campaign that Oxfam Fair Trade is launching in Belgium this december. He used Leonardo’s Last Supper, but replaced the heads of Jesus and the apostles by the features of modern heroes from media and current affairs.
Bart Simpson, ET, Mickey Mouse, Charles Chaplin, John Lennon, Pope Benedictus, they all make an appearance. There’s even an anonymous Belgian reporter with a quiff. I wonder why he’s the only one who’s made “unrecognizable”. This wouldn’t be a take on Moulinsart’s quite protectionist attitude towards people who use Tintin’s likeness, would it ?

“Is hungry…”
Beestenzooi by flemish cartoonist Joffe is one of the strips published by Belgian weekly Focus Knack in their year-long quest for new cartooning talent. I quite like these strips : the idea and execution are simple and unassuming, but you can see real promise lurking underneath…

“… escapes”

A Catholic coloring book uses a comic format to warn children against the dangers of child abuse. One of its advices is avoiding being alone in a room with an adult. Even if that adult is a priest. I’m not sure that was the message they’re trying to send…

Quite an amusing campaign by PC&V Communications from the Philippines. One in a series that also features a Darth Vader / Leia mashup, and a mix of Harry Potter and Hermione Griffin, but this one had the best execution. Cool logo too (once more, tip of the hat to Ads of the World) .
