The Milky Bar Kid

Monday, April 21st, 2008

The Milky Bar Kid used to promote Nestlé’s Milky Bar white chocolate in TV commercials in the UK, Australia and a few other countries. A comic with the “blond, spectacle-wearing young boy, usually dressed as a cowboy” (Wikipedia), featured on the back pages of UK comic magazine TV Comic (in this case, issue 716 from 1965).

Fisher-Price Supes

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Judging from this fact-file from Super Friend #1 (DC’s newest animation-type title for younger readers, while also aiming at an older crowd by using a nostalgia-enfused title), Superman is actually a Fisher-Price play figure.

(update : they actually are Fisher-Price play figures…)

I’ve never heard of this band, but judging from the Frank Frazetta sleeve design, I can pretty well imagine what it sounds like…

Wear a hard hat

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

You will have noticed that some things are changing here at the Ephemerist. We recently upgraded to WordPress 2.5 (much to our delight, I must say), and we are currently changing the way we add metadata to the blog’s posts.

Up till now, we used a quite cumbersome list of categories. That was less than ideal for two reasons. Firstly, it lead to an ever expanding list of categories with only one or two entries, making the pageload heavier and heavier. Secondly, it caused recurring pondering about which category to choose. Since 2.5 offers the possibility to use tags as well as categories, we are currently limiting the number of categories used in the blog, and adding extra tags to the posts.

At the moment, certain posts may not yet be categorised, or may not have been given tags. This may result in you not finding what you’re looking for. If that is the case, if you find a post that’s missing metadata or if you think that something is wrong with the metadata of another post, please let me know. Also, as we’re also changing the way videos are embedded in the blog, some videos may be unavailable at the moment. Drop me a line !

We expect to have this migration finished by the end of the month. Until then, please bear with us, and wear a hard hat.

Eisner in PS Magazine Online

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

Fans of Will Eisner, rejoice ! The Virginia Commonwealth University library seems to have quite a few issues of the fabled P.S. Magazine in its collections, and has now made complete scans for 145 regular issues, 3 special issues, and 14 index issues available on their Digital Collections website.

PS magazine, the Preventive Maintenance Monthly, is a publication by LOGSA, the US Army Logistics Support Activity, aimed at spreading awareness about the necessity of taking good care of your gear. Eisner started this magazine in 1951, and continued to work on until the 1970s with Klaus Nording, Mike Ploog and other artists (ref) through his company, American Visuals Corporation.

The magazine is still being published today, with contributions by Joe Kubert and others. PDF versions of current issues are available at the PS Magazine website.

Flemish cartoonist Nix created these stickers for an awareness campaign for the Flemish Children’s Rights Agency.  Even if you don’t understand Dutch, I think it’s pretty clear what the message is…

Your Comics Will Love You Back

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Cartoonist Alec Longstreth gave a series of talks at the Centre for Cartoon Studies on good cartooning practices and since he is such a nice guy, he’s put his complete set of lecture notes on his website.  As a comic, no less, covering everything from drawing to reproduction, mailing, promotion and even work ethic and inspiration!

Magic Pickle Plugged !

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Unshelved, the library web comic by Bill Barnes and Gene Ambaum, tries to plug Scott Morse’s Magic Pickle. “I don’t read comics” - if I had a dollar for every time I tried to convince somebody to try a good book, only to be totally given the cold shoulder when it turned out to be a comic…
