Arsene Roisin

Monday, May 26th, 2008

In her blog Not Dead Yet, Judith Taylor, an 80-year old retired PA from Hertfordshire (United Kingdom), consistently writes down things she would like to live on after she’s gone. In 2006 she wrote a short account on a romance she experienced with the French cartoonist Arsène Roisin, who sadly died when he was only 32.

It’s wonderful art and a wonderful account. It confronted me with my own prejudice that older people always were old, and never had a life of their own.

I would like to learn more about this artist - the only thing I could find was a listing of issues of the French weekly Le Hérisson to which he contributed in 1952.

Wiley Miller’s Non Sequitur strip for today salutes Mad Magazine Fold-in genius Al Jaffee. Jaffee’s back in town, it would seem.

Who says there’s no comics in mainstream media ?  This short “humor piece” by Mike Sacks and Julian Sancton (from Esquire Magazine - check out Mike’s site for a full-sized version) has got what it takes : art in sequence, a good storyline and a damn poignant message.

Bat Man

Dan Piraro’s take on the plethora of ™’s that plague the nation’s comics heroes.  I like it.  I also like the stick of dynamite waiting to go off while the two heroes bicker about intellectual laws.

New Charles Burns portfolio

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

French publisher United Dead Artists presents Permagel, a portfolio of 32 prints on very large format (30 cm by 40 cm - the photo above should give you an idea).  It’s printed in double black (which, I think, means, in two print runs) on 170 gr Rives paper.  This produciton was edited by French cartoonist Stephane Blanquet.

From what I can gather (judging from the screenshots) the art is not really new, but rather a selection of work from Big Baby, Black Hole and what seem to be a number of side projects (I think I noticed that Iggy Pop record cover as well).  Looks promising enough.
