Roddenberry comics

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Roddenberry.com, the website of Roddenberry Comunications (as in Gene Roddenberry, purveyor of “smart, meaningful, multimedia entertainment for people around the world”) has added not one but two weekly comics to their content line up : Rod & Barry, the comical adventures of two quite cliché-looking aliens, and Gene’s Journal, about a young boy with a penchant for science fiction.

Both comics do look and sound alike, which is no wonder because they are both created by David Reddick, a Paws inc. collaborator by day and freelance cartoonist extraordinaire by night.  Reddick previously did Trek Life for Startrek.com, about trekker fandom, and has recently also kickstarted a sword-and-sorcery spoof called Legend Of Bill, both of which are also very good fun.  Read all of his comics, and more at his website.

Raw Materials

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Larry Gonick, of The Cartoon History of the Universe fame, has started a new comic strip for the Discovery Channel website.  It’s called Raw Materials and it explains difficult terms like self-preservation algorhythms or nanotechnology to children.

So far, it seems to be looking for its own tone of voice, but I guess it will only take a little time before it shines.

Happy, happy !  While we’re waiting for the collected editions, which should become available from the Times website any time now, Nick Abadzis is making the weekly installments of his comic Trial of the Sober Dog available on his website as soon as they’ve featured in the T2 section of the Times.  Spread the word !

Meat the Beetles

As far as I’m concerned, this is the best Mutts storyline so far. It’s got everything : dead pan logic, Beatles, wordplay, and, of course, Earl and Mooch. Patrick McDonnell rules the comics !

Superman has style

This is the Superman drawing that Rosemary Travale created for Project Rooftop’s Superman - Man Of Style competition, which ended last week.

I like it, it has a certain je ne sais quoi

The Cosmic Cube

Much as I like references to comics in general, I’m afraid that I don’t know enough about the current Funky Winkerbean storyline (except that it’s something to do with a pizza venture) to fully appreciate last weekend’s episode. Still, it’s kinda cool, and at least it pointed me towards an earlier, quite haunting landmines storyline on creator Tom Batiuk’s website

The Parliament of Comics

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Flemish cartoonist Tom Bouden, best known for his series of gay comics, recently published a quite lovely album called “Paniek in Stripland(Panic in Comic Land).  It’s a book that pays hommage to everything that made classic Flemish comics great, and features every Flemish comics character that has been around since the sixties.

The storyline is quite simple : a plot by the united comics villains has resulted in the disappearance of all comic heroes.  After an urgent meeting by the united comics creators, two lesser-known hopefuls, Kroepie and Boelie Boem Boem are asked to come to the rescue.

While most of the story will be beyond everybody who wasn’t raised on a steady diet of Jommeke, De Rode Ridder and Suske & Wiske (not to mention Thomas Pips, Dees Dubbel and others), some of the scenes might be quite intriguing for those interested in Eurocomics.  Take the scene pictured above, presenting the cartoonists council mentioned before.  We see Hergé presiding over the meeting, but the careful observant also will recognize many more comics luminaries.

In the top-right frame the following cartoonists are present : Pom (of Piet Pieter & Bert Bibber fame), Marc Legendre (Biebel), Erik Meijnen, Marc Sleen and Jan Bosschaert.  In the frame directly below, we see, a.o. Jef Nys, Dirk Stallaert, Paul Geerts, Maurice De Bevere (Lucky Luke), Bob De Moor, Raoul Cauvin and André Franquin.  The older guy with the sideburns in the third strip is Willy Vandersteen, creator of Suske & Wiske and one of the founding fathers of Flemish comics.

Jarno Latva-Nikkola

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

A few weeks ago I blogged about the loot from Stockholm SPX that Lotta sent to me.  One of the particularly intriguing items in that package was an anthology of small press Scandinavian comics printed as a small newspaper.  It reminded me of similar Finnish publications I had picked up at Angoulème last year.  For some reason, Scandinavian alternative comics seem to involve very bright, almost psychedelic colors, and a combination of art and free-flowing typography, as if  to create a similar effect to those famous rock posters in the late sixties.

One of the few artists in the anthology that was familiar to me, was Jarno Latva-Nikkola, who did the strip I’m reposting here.  He’s been involved in Kuti Magazine (just one look at their website and you’ll know what I was trying to say about colors before) and the Boing Being publishing outfit, always with quite strange, colorful and often quite explicit strips.

I chose the strip above since it was the only one with an English translation that I could find.  It may well not be that representative for the rest of his work, but I think it gives a good impression nevertheless.
