Steven Worth of the ASIFA – Hollywood Animation Archive recently ran a wonderful series of vintage prints featuring Cliff Sterrett’s Polly And Her Pals from the 1936 run of the Sunday Oregonean.

That in itself is very cool, and deserves our collective gratitude, but the pages also contained some very interesting and even endearing comics-style advertisments, that I just couldn’t let go by…  So, tip of the hat to Steven, and enjoy these gems.

Socks and Barney

Socks was the official Clinton Cat, and Barney still is the Bush administration’s First Dog.  Ashtonishing Space Thrills creator Steve Conley picked up both presidential pets, along with Rudi Giulliani’s pet rat, and promoted them to characters in his political satire, Socks and Barney.

The animals star in a daily strip that closely follows the comings and goings in the race for the presidency.  Conley started the strip on election day 2007 and hopes to run it until the big day in november.  Some of the subjects are a bit too arcane for foreigners, but for the most part it’s nice to hear a sensible voice for once.
