And yet more balloons in ads

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Of all the graphemes in the visual language of comic books, the word or speech balloon is probably the most common one, or at least the one that is most often used outside the strict context of comic books without any connotations of register or hidden meaning (except maybe, “Look, this is funny !”).

These examples are ads for the Al Jawal telecommunications company, found on Ads of the World.

Antwerp Book Fair

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

At the Antwerp Book Fair (or Boekenbeurs), all Flemish and Dutch publishers (and a good deal of foreign language distributors too) present their newest books and projects.  This year, illustrator Mark Borgions provided the poster, website and all promotional material.  He also created a quite hip and snazzy animated trailer.  which reminds me of Fritz Freleng’s wonderful title sequences for The Pink Panther (or the titles for The Nanny, for that matter).

Joost Swarte signs

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Check out these sketches that Mike Rhode got from grandmaster Joost Swarte !  At least Mike had brought his books along to SPX to get them signed.  I remember spending an hour next to Swarte without mustering the courage to even speak to him.  Talk about fanboy…
