The Trails of Poetry

Monday, November 17th, 2008

With his newspaper blackout poems Texas writer Austin Kleon constantly walks the thin line between literature and visual arts, and in his recent creations this distinction becomes even vaguer.

Kleon creates new meaning from existing newspaper articles by blacking out most of the content, and leaving only a few keywords which can be read as a new and original message.  In Kleon’s case this new message often has a Koan-like, poetic feel to it.

In his latest poem Kleon introduces traditional comics graphemes, such as gutters and trails to guide the reader’s eye through his poem.  Even though he explains this as some sort of deus ex machina to overcome the limitations of western left-to-right reading conventions, these in fact generate a new dynamic in terms of time and space, and, in my opinion, render the result all the more interesting.  The rather scrawly blackouts only strengthen this impression, by adding texture and depth to the overall picture.

Ever Ware

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

It’s not exactly the right time to go on a diet if you live around the Belgian city of Leuven.  Twelve restaurants have launched the second edition of LeuvenKookKunst.be.

From November 20 until May 20 (which, as it happens, is yours truly’s birthday) they invite you to come and enjoy a specially created culinary menu, finishing off, as is custom, with a nice cup of coffee.  Afterwards you are free to take home your Royal Boch cup and saucer, which were exclusively designed for this event by Flemish illustrator and designer Ever Meulen.

Ever created a total of six cups, each with their matching saucer, which are only available via the participating restaurants.  You’ll have to make the rounds if you want to complete your collection.  Like I said, it’s not the best time to try and lose some weight…

Tomine in the New Yorker

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

It would seem that Adrian Tomine has found the perfect outlet for his artwork, which is neither a cartoon strictu sensu, or a mere illustration.  In fact, Tomine has mastered the art of telling his stories of angst and alienation in a single image.  I can’t wait for these pages to be collected in a thick, handsome volume.

Seth in The Times

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Seth illustrated five election day poems for today’s New York Times, and the Times graciously also made them available on their website, so look here, here, here, here, and here.  They are beautiful.

Happy birthday

It’s J’s birthday today, and this illustration is for her.  I stole it from Frank, but I’m sure he won’t mind.

New eBoy book

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

The new eBoy book, Pixarama, is finally available.  Based on what I can gather from the Flickr pictures, it looks like a whopper of a book, much like those large-sized picture books my parents used to buy for us as kids.  It’s a bit pricy (and shipping is a pain), but I’m seriously considering getting one.

Jordan Crane

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

I haven’t seen this issue of the Atlantic Monthly on the stands just yet (sometimes it would seem that the world turns a little slower in our country), but I am completely in love with this cover by none other than Jordan Crane.  It completely encapsulates the joy and dangers of reading : it completely engulfs you, and leaves you oblivious for the beauty and dangers around you.  Wonderful !

The excellent Leif Peng recently showcased equally excellent commercial and illustrative cartooning by Willard Mullin.  highly recommended !
