New York Cheat Sheets

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Christoph Niemann lived in New York for a while, and after moving back to Berlin, he has graciously made public the long and secretly guarded secret cheat sheets that purebred Newyorkers seem to use.  The list of ten flash cards ran in the New York Times and is simply beautiful.

Abstract City

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The NYTimes.com website is currently running ‘Abstract City’, a nice little story by illustrator and cartoonist Christoph Niemann about his children’s obsession with the New York Subway system.

I know Niemann’s cartoony, almost ligne claire work from the New Yorker, and I wasn’t expecting him to produce an abstract piece like this.  Somehow he manages to weave the visual language of his subject, the subway and his trains and timetables, into his narrative and still keep his art very readable.  And his subject matter is extremely recognizable - kids seem to have a natural way with systems.

Together with Alison Bechdel’s piece in Entertainment Weekly, this is one of the best strips-where-you-wouldn’t-expect-them of this year.
