Poetry as comics

Tuesday, February 6th, 2007

The Poetry Foundation has added a new feature to their website : Poetry as comic strip. Cartoonists are invited to interpret poems from the Foundation’s archive, which boasts more than 4500 poems.

First up is David Heatley with a comic strip based on Diane Wakoski’s 1966 poem “Belly Dancer.” The result is published on the website, and is also downloadable as a high resolution PDF file.

I think this is a great initiative, not only because it opens up poetry for new audiences (I’m not a poetry man myself), but more importantly because it offers a new and exciting (and hopefully recurring) venue for comic artists. To be continued ?
