Tintin inspires

Over the years, Tintin has inspired Belgian magazine cover designers to come up with references, parodies or paraphrasings of almost iconic images from his adventures. In this post, one from a Pourquoi Pas issue from 1988 and three Humo covers from 1985 and 1992. Pourquoi Paswas running an article on the difficulties of living as a Chinese in Belgium, and this take on the Blue Lotus cover, with a rather stereotypical Chinaman replacing Tintin, and a Belgian lion instead of the dragon, was a nice evocation of that subject.

The Humo images after the break are by Ever Meulen and Jan Bosschaert.

Somewhere last year Ever Meulen made some campaign and corporate image illustrations for Passa Porta, a literary organisation in Brussels. They’re scattered around the website, so happy hunting !

“De Stiel” (”The Craft”), a retrospective Ever Meulen exhibition, from february 9 up until april 13. More info : beeldbeeld.be. This the next in a series of impressive shows, which in the past featured work by Dave McKean, Chris Ware, Dan Clowes, Hanco Kolk and others. Highly recommended.

Ever Meulen on Writing

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

Ever Meulen has a long history of illustration related to books, reading and writing. These stamps are the latest in that line. They were issued earlier by the Belgian Post Office, and deal with all forms of writing (with the motto “What’s written, stays”). I like the fact that Ever didn’t limit “writing” to books, but also included music, letters and even emails. In fact, he focuses on letter writing - after all, this is the post office. On that note - check out the sad git in the last stamp : is it any wonder that the only person in these stamps using a computer is crying his eyes out ? The Post Office needs your business, people, so stop emailing and start writing letters !

Also, check out the git’s t-shirt on the last stamp. This is a reference to the comic series “Stamp & Pilou“, which the Belgian Post Office has been publishing for quite a while now. I don’t really care for it much myself, but it has introduced a lot of kids to stamp collecting, which is a good thing.

Finally, a little philatelist phact. These stamps are among the first to be issued in Belgium without an actual monetary value. Instead, they have a “1″ in a circle in the top right corner, indicating that they can be used for all regular mail, regardless the rise in tarriffs in the future.

Once more Ever Meulen on books - this time an illustration for a supplement that Humo produced together with a chain of bookstores in Belgium. Combine holidays and thrillers, and this is what you get. Neat.

These days, Humo is running a series on what VIP’s read during their summer holidays. Ever Meulen provided the illustration. And it’s great. As usual.

Carrier Bags !

I like carrier bags. I think they are a good medium to bring good art to the masses. Case in point - two bags designed by cartoonists for comic stores. The one above was made by Ever Meulen for Het Besloten Land in Leuven. The one below is by Roger Langridge, for Gosh in London.

40 Part 39 - Best Wishes

New Year’s cards are always a good source for nice illustrative work. These cards were commissioned respectively by Humo Magazine in 2005, and comic store Het Besloten Land in Leuven, Belgium in 2006(the best comic store on the continent, let me tell you). The art is by Ever Meulen (obviously) and Ilah, one of the few women cartoonists in Belgium, but also one of the finest. Cartoonists, that is.

What ? Is this year gone already as well ?

40 Part 18 - Humo 50

Elaborating further on Kamagurka and Herr Seele, here is a beautiful comic that they created for Humo, to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The cool part about this strip is that two other famous collaborators to Humo, Ever Meulen and Joost Swarte, also contributed to it.

40 Part 5 - Bel 20

Here are a couple of CD covers for a series of collections featuring the best Belgian rock songs from the 80’s. I’m not sure about the art of these things. Either it’s Ever Meulen, or it’s somebody doing a damn good job of imitating him. Naturally, the series being vouched for by Humo tends to point towards the first possibility, but still - the illo’s are awkwardly narrative to be vintage Meulen.
