Show some restraint !

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

Morgan “Super Size Me” Spurlock is at it again with “What Would Jesus Buy ?“, in which he follows the reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse. Judging from the trailer, this reverend Billy is one over the top character (I can hear critics all over the world sigh, “well, only in America…”), but his message is true nevertheless : shops and stores all over the world have gone bonkers with Christmas. Flower shops in my community have been putting up decorations since september !

Spurlock is not the only one who feels this has gone too far. Flemish radio hosts Peeters & Pichal have launched a campaign, together with media weekly Humo, to motivate shop owners to leave off the cheer until December 15. And cartoonist Jeroom created a sticker for that purpose, shown above (saying “For God’s sake, no Christmas stuff until December 15 !”).

I for one couldn’t agree more, and so, here’s an English version. Put it on your website, and spread the word.

Once more Ever Meulen on books - this time an illustration for a supplement that Humo produced together with a chain of bookstores in Belgium. Combine holidays and thrillers, and this is what you get. Neat.

With one week to go in the Tour de France (in which, incidentally, the soap seems to be winning instead of the sport), I thought it would be nice to draw your attention to Flemish illustrator Jeroom’s Tour De France Panorama which he drew for Humo Magazine.

It’s completely for you to enjoy on the Humo Tour De France Website, with Jeroom’s unique combination of boring infographics and quirky absurdity.

These days, Humo is running a series on what VIP’s read during their summer holidays. Ever Meulen provided the illustration. And it’s great. As usual.

40 Part 39 - Best Wishes

New Year’s cards are always a good source for nice illustrative work. These cards were commissioned respectively by Humo Magazine in 2005, and comic store Het Besloten Land in Leuven, Belgium in 2006(the best comic store on the continent, let me tell you). The art is by Ever Meulen (obviously) and Ilah, one of the few women cartoonists in Belgium, but also one of the finest. Cartoonists, that is.

What ? Is this year gone already as well ?

Elaborating further on Kamagurka and Herr Seele, here is a beautiful comic that they created for Humo, to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The cool part about this strip is that two other famous collaborators to Humo, Ever Meulen and Joost Swarte, also contributed to it.

This is a design for a Humo sticker by Ever Meulen, featuring his early character, The Green Rock Eater. Ever’s style was quite different then, back in the early seventies…

De Gouden Uil by Ever Meulen

Each year, Humo creates a special supplement to coincide with the Gouden Uil, a Flemish literary award. For this year’s event, Ever Meulen created the illustration above. Ever also created the award itself, which has been given out for the thirteenth time this year.

I like this year’s illustration a lot because in some ways (and I don’t know whether this was the purpose or not), it expresses a feeling that I’ve been having for a long time as a parent : once your kid starts reading a book, don’t interrupt, watch from a distance and create an atmosphere that will allow him to keep reading.

In february of this year, Humo ran a series of interview with young teens who suffer from a severe and even terminal illness. Ever Meulen provided the illustrations, which, as always, were bang on and gripping.

Ever Meulen created these illustrations for an article on creative writing seminars in the Flemish weekly Humo. Neat, as usual.
