Meat the Beetles

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

As far as I’m concerned, this is the best Mutts storyline so far. It’s got everything : dead pan logic, Beatles, wordplay, and, of course, Earl and Mooch. Patrick McDonnell rules the comics !

He was a star in his days, but now he seems to be largely forgotten, along with all the other heroes of the pop art movement. Still, Guy Peellaert made some pretty impressive paintings (the Rock Dreams series literally rocked), and the quintessential pop art comic, Pravda. And he was a Belgian, potferdekke !

Let It Beast was the second album by The Beastles, a mashup project by DJ BC, mixing the Beastie Boys with the Beatles. The results, which have since gone underground, ranged from the zany to the genius, with tracks like “Electrified Kite” and “A Day In The Life Of A Beastie Boy” as absolute highlights. Josh Neufeld provided the cover.

Dutch illustration wizard (and Gutsman creator) Erik Kriek presents two illustrations he made for the Dutch railways’ information magazine, Rails, over at Clogwork. I like them because they’re vintage Kriek (even though he’s evolving in his use of color) and because they are Beatles-related (even though the Beatles’ portraits need some work, I’m afraid).
