Thanks to Dad !

This old ad (from The Adventures Of Alan Ladd #2), reminded me of an article I read in a Flemish newspaper the other day, which claimed that of all the members of a household, father gets the least presents with Christmas. It’s just something I wanted to bring out in the open, so to speak. So there…

And another thing - are there still men who address their wives as “mother” ? Or is she really his mother, and has she aged very well ? We’ll never know…

Sneakers and batteries

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

By chance I came across a bunch of Alan Ladd comics recently, which also contained these wonderful elaborate comic style ads for Ray-O-Vac batteries and P-F sneakers. What was the deal with all these hyphens in the brand names from the 1950’s ?

These have been up for quite a while, but I only came across them over the weekend.

The inimitable Leif Peng (of Today’s Inspiration) has collected a whole series of advertisments by Frank Robbins on his Flickr page. They’re very cool : not only do you learn about the benefits of brushing your teeth, but you also get some good lessons in life as well. Useful, I think, if you still live in the 40’s…

Dan “Mr Toast” Goodsell showcases a few Scrappy Candy Wrappers, paper bags used in the 1930’s by the Runkel Brothers Company to wrap their candy in (obviously). They featured a cool cartoon character, reminding me of Our Gang and other street urchins. Very nice find, Dan !
