Clowes goes burlesque

An older poster for the now legendary Velvet Hammer burlesque show, by Dan Clowes.  I’d heard of the poster, but I’d never seen it before until René Claude posted it on Pour 15 Minutes d’Amour.

That’s two Dan Clowes posts in a week.  I think that’s enough.

Do you know anything about this? Was this a poster made to advertise an actual Velvet Hammer Burlesque show? Or is it a print that was mass produced? I came across this poster for sale locally and thought it was cool so I bought it. Curious what it was about so after I brought it home I tried to look it up and at first came up with nothing. But I’ve figured out it’s by Daniel Clowes, Rube Ruben is a character of comedian Charles Schneider. Christopher Wonder is real and the Velvet Hammer Burlesque Show is also real, although it started in 1995 and the poster says copyright 1959, that Juxtapoz is an art magazine, and that the address and phone number on the poster do correspond to the El Rey Theater in LA. But some of this information took a lot of digging to figure out and I can only find a few images online of this poster with no actual information about it, like mostly a few Pinterest saves, so my interest just keeps growing. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

That's my opinion. But do leave yours:
